Changing Room
Cynthia McCain

from the era of the eating disorder

that time she tried on a dress

in a second hand store

on a dull afternoon

in the slow pale season

when she was alone

an evening dress

a flow of blue sequins

floor-length and sleeveless

cut to the breast bone

opened

down the back

heavy on the hips

heavy down the thighs

slipping like strange hands

she heard the sound

falling closed behind

dark blue like a river

in shadow

all the flesh scraped off

ribs like exposed beams

under her fluorescent sternum

in the mirror

bones in the river

starry night
