Hellebore
Nikkole A. Hughes

The hellebore huddles
among its more
bombastic brethren,
the larkspur and clematis.
It is shielded from
untoward glances by
upstart foliage,
like an ingénue guarded by
an overzealous governess.

from a long line of witches,
those midnight weeds
which were once a woman's
only weapon
against the werewolves that hunt
their daughters
in the dark.
