This Might Be the Warmest Parking Lot in Canada
Aidan Chafe

a mother in mittens rubs her face in a frenzy
as the habit spreads to her children in the backseat.

the car coughs, tries to get over the cold. January
with its foul mouth drives people crazy, but I tend

to look past it. two smokers, the last of their kind,
huddle together inside an empty shopping-cart

station. one becomes a cloud while the other mutters,
why doesn’t Justin build a wall to keep out winter?

a mess of police cruisers stutter outside the coffee
shop. a lost squirrel freezes trying to find its tree.
